Buick’s latest concept car is a small, coupe-like premium city vehicle, Avant. What? A Buick that isn’t the size of your childhood home? GM tested small cars on a few of their brands, and based on the achievements of Buick in China, and their growing presence in American cities, made it the perfect choice for The “New” GM.

The video presentation – via The GM Lab, which is a blog set up through General Motors public relations, displays some of the finer tidbits of Avant. First off we at Buickpedia have to comment – we LOVE the look of Avant! Knowing this is merely the concept we know Avant won’t keep its futuristic design after production model phase, but the slender curves and egg-like shape ranks up there with Hyundai’s Accent and Toyota’s Yaris.

Special features being worked into Avant’s design include a retractile luggage storage trolley, which loads/unloads the vehicle for its driver, “Smart Doors” and translucent glass roof, which can switch from clear to dark in a matter of seconds. GM claims their “research was not brand specific” when working on Buick Avant – wonder what a Chevy Avant would look like? Stay tuned for more here and at thelab.gmblogs.

Buick, one of four surviving “core brands” from auto maker General Motors, announced yesterday they will introduce 4 new models in the next 24 months. Is this an equation for success? We already know 2010 launches a new LaCrosse model – there is also speculation that a Buick Regal concept may be introduced by 2011, although no specific vehicles names were released to automotive press.

SO far, Opel will be the basis for future Buick design concepts, in the same way Saturn used to use The O for their models. Speaking of Saturn, Buick has mentioned their plans for the first crossover-small SUV hybrid car in the form of the Vue. Other future vehicles by the brand known best for huge cars you grandparents drive might include a Chevy Cruze type mid size sedan along with an Aveo type economy class. Buick would grab attention by doing a 180 – turning to small vehicle production.

General Motors and Chrysler parent company Cerberus have spent the last month secretly talking about possible mergers and buy outs between the two automotive giants. At least, they were…until word got out. Now, both companies are being tight lipped about any such discussions. But if financial matters keep going as downhill as fast as they are lately, Chrysler may just jump on GM and buy them out whole. And when something like this happens, some of the employees, and in this case some of the product, will be deleted from a line up. Does Buick have what it takes to survive an automotive company take over?

If this possible merger took place one a few years ago, we’d say no to Buick’s chances. Today, Buick seems to be turning over a new leaf. First, they brought hybrid technology to thier sedan line up. There are also talks of bringing back the classic and highly selling Riviera model, pictures above. It’s decisions such as this that can help an auto maker shine during unclear times. Surprisingly, the Enclave crossover has become one of the make’s best selling vehicles, even in a time of high gasoline prices. Buick drivers are loyal, and despite stereotype not all are over the age of 65. All this design and technology experimentation is risque, and pricey – but risk is part of the game if you want to stay alive, and Buick is turning out all their tricks.
